From the new Captiva lawns to Bermuda, to Fescue, proper lawn care consists of a weekly dose of maintenance, especially during the growing season. The longer it is neglected the more it will punish us and the longer we let it grow, the longer it will take to mow. Lawns are like pets, they require love and attention. As long as we keep our grass watered, fed with the proper amounts of fertilizers, free of weeds and pests, we will continue to be rewarded for our quality hard work.
One of several enemies to the lawn is the weed, and rightfully so because they are the most noticeable obstruction that stands between us and a healthy, well groomed lawn. Weeds sneak up on lawns that are not well rooted. Turf grass that is not deep rooted is caused by improper watering and fertilization. A healthy lawn has a deep root system that fortifies itself against invasion, not only from weeds, but also from pests.
The typical yard should receive at least one inch of water per week to maintain a healthy root system. However, this can vary as some lawns are grown under sandy soil conditions that allow faster water absorption. Alternatively, clay based soils will greatly diminish the rate of water absorption and can cause mold.
Mowing the yard on a consistent basis will also help thicken the root systems. Allowing your lawn to grow too tall will force you to raise the deck height of your mower. It is recommended you cut no more than 1/3 of the length of a blade of grass. Cutting off more than 1/3 inch could damage the lawn and cause it to turn yellow or brown.
Your lawn is like the red carpet that leads up to your front door. Proper lawn care mixed with the right amount of water and fertilizer is the recipe that can turn your turf into a beautiful carpet. This coming season make proper lawn maintenance your top priority.
