Staying at the Tongsai Bay in Koh Samui

My husband and I went to Koh Samui this summer. It was our third trip to the Thai island. We love the great weather on the island and the beautiful beaches. Each trip we have stayed at a different beach to try and experience a new part of the island each time. This time we chose Tongsai Bay, primarily because it had such good reviews.

Tongsai Bay is in the north-east of the island, just north of Choeng Mon beach. It is a small bay that has just one resort. This is the eponymously called ‘The Tongsai Bay’. This is a big selling point for the resort as only guests at the resort use the beach.

The beach itself is about 200 meters long. This is very small compared to Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut beaches. At first I was a bit disappointed with such a small beach but I soon changed my mind. The sand was very fine and the sea was calm when we went in August. It seemed that most of the other guests preferred to lie around the large swimming pool so we had the beach virtually to ourselves.

The Tongsai Bay has been featured in a number of magazines as being ‘The Most Romantic Spot’ in Koh Samui. It is difficult to know how they decide these things. We stayed in a ‘beachfront suite’. It was in the main hotel block of the resort. It wasn’t exactly beach front as the swimming pool was in front of us. It did, however, have a nice large balcony with a beautiful sea view. There was also a bath tub that had the same view. I enjoyed having a bath and watching the view but had to shut the windows to stop the mosquitoes biting me. Mosquitoes are definitely not romantic.

The décor of our room was a little drab. The wooden paneling was nice but it made the room a little dark. My husband and I enjoy brighter interiors with more of a minimal feel. I have a slightly cynical feeling that I share with my husband that romance nowadays is equated too much with money and luxury. If we could have afforded one of private pool villas then it would have been far more ‘romantic’.

The Tongsai Bay was good fun to stay at. We played tennis every day for free. I had a couple of spa treatments and we often took a taxi into Fisherman’s Village in Bophut to go to a nice restaurant.

We loved the peace and quiet of Tongsai Bay. It was also conveniently close to the airport, the Big Buddha statue and Bophut. The resort was good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We liked the fact that we could meet the management during our stay at a free cocktail party.

However, it wasn’t the most romantic experience we’ve had. That would have to be our wedding ceremony in the Himalayas, which I might add only cost us a fraction of what it cost to stay at Tongsai Bay.
